So the company I’m working for is currently hiring. We’re looking for a programmer to do work in Adobe Flex (basically building flash applications in actionscript). There’s no requirement that you know flex, only that you’ve programmed before in some normal language and have some basic fundamentals down (OOP and stuff..). If you’re at all interested, it doesn’t hurt to apply. (seriously, even I got the job…) It’s a lot of fun and you will get the opportunity to meet the author of this blog. :O

The details are here. I think the job is also posted on PortTriton (UCSD’s job search thing - where I found it) and Monster. The company website is here. Let me know if you have questions and such.

Good luck!

(until I figure out how to tag, this one’s for google: job opportunity, work, programming, photometria, money)

I’m sure the drizzle yesterday helped some.

The witch fire, the county’s largest, is at around 90 percent containment. The Poomacha and Harris fire are looking at around 45 and 65 percent containment. Full containment of those fires are estimated to be the 29th and 31st.

Meanwhile, one blogger wrote an article comparing Katrina to our fires, blaming racism for the vast difference in response.
Read it here:

Another blogger’s response to it here:

I have nothing to say about it.

Remember the Lady on Bike?

Here’s the girl on unicycle.

Taken from here, but I am (ad/popup)-less.

The wordpress plugin is courtesy of this guy.

Unrelated to the fires, I’ve made a few blog tweaks.  See the “Pages” section on the right.  There should be rolling updates in the next few days.  I finally got around to getting those back up.  I think I’ll add another section sometime in the future…perhaps links or so like in almostFlan v.2…

This information must be everywhere so I’ll be fairly brief.

  • UCSD is officially closed for the rest of this week.
  • The witch fire seems to be moving east, Julian is under mandatory evacuation.
  • A fire update (as of about 8pm)
    • Witch Creek Fire - close to 200,000 acres burned; about 1 percent contained
    • Harris Fire - 72,000 acres burned; about 10 percent contained
    • Rice Fire - 7,500 acres burned; 10 percent contained
  • Estimated containment date for the Harris and Rice fires look to be around October 30 or so
  • A list of burned structures are located here
  • Over half a million people have been evacuated thus far
  • A blog about how you can help

Bush declared a state of emergency this morning.

For a look on the containment status and other information regarding each fire, check out calfire. Many of fires don’t seem to be well contained yet, namely the witch fire and rice fire citing zero percent contained and the harris fire at 5 percent. According to the latest post on the SOSD blog, it seems the fire swept through Rancho Santa Fe yesterday. According to the fire map I posted in the last post, the burnt areas seem to be expanding.

UCSD is also closed again today and I got an email from work telling me the office will be closed, too. It seems only the UCSD Medical Center will be opened.

Sign On San Diego moved its blog to blogspot. Now it’s finally readable. The SOSD site was completely bogged down earlier. It seems the witch fire has burned down 145,000 acres and as of 7:45 pm, is zero percent contained. Further, looks like the evacuation area is expanding rapidly.

The blog is here.

On another note, this was taken from Adrianne’s AIM info:

2-1-1 is seeking volunteers to help in the next 72 hours to take calls and/or fill other roles at 2-1-1 should that be needed. Shifts are about four hours and training is available. If interested, email Meg Storer at mstorer@211sandiego.org with your name, phone number where you can be reached, your email address, and the dates/times that work best with your schedule. A 2-1-1 person will contact you directly once you send that information.

I’ve sent an email to them to volunteer, but I’m sure they’re bogged down, too. Also, I’m not sure what a bunch of untrained people could do to help out at this point anyway.

This is a fire map.

A bigger version

kpbs.org updates

Around yesterday or so, there was a fire in Malibu that spread down towards San Diego causing evacuations in Escondido, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Santa Fe, basically everything “east of the 5, north of the 56″. The fires have been pretty reminiscent of first year (2003) so far. Everything smells like smoke and the sky is slightly orange. Yesterday, the fires were, according to the acting mayor of Malibu, zero percent contained. This morning, as of 6:15 am according to Sheriff Kolender, “things are getting worse, not better”.

Report from this morning (6:30 am):

Anyway, stay safe if you’re in the area.

This blog seems to be keeping pretty good track.

So I was going through some old stuff and I found a DVD in bad condition. I didn’t know what was on it since it was just labeled “Frank’s Stuff”.

This is how I cleaned it:

Metacafe link hereIt worked beautifully.

Turned out to be a bunch of my old stuff. Made my day.
